Better Men Everywhere

At least $2 from every product sold goes towards our social purpose.

Hairy As is a social enterprise with profit-for-purpose at its core. Since first conceived, our focus has always been to create amazing natural beard care products right here in Australia, with fun and colourful branding that reflects our own personalities and our passion for driving change.

Hairy As will be working with key partners to develop a peer support network of men who are committed to gender equality and bystander intervention to challenge the condoning of disrespect and violence against women.

Violence against women is overwhelmingly a men’s problem, and men must be part of the solution.

Our activities will come under 3 key pillars:

The first implementation step for our social purpose strategy is seeking training partners. We look forward to updating our community as we progress.

Why this issue?

Men's violence against women is endemic and deadly. In Australia, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner. Two in five women (39%) have experienced violence since the age of 15.

Violence against women is driven by gender inequality. Primary prevention aims to shift the underlying drivers of violence against women - the systems, structures, norms, attitudes, practices and power imbalances that drive this violence.

How can we drive change?

Changes to the prevalence of violence against women will only be achieved through a specific focus on the gendered drivers of this violence.

The ‘Our Watch - Change the Story Framework’ outlines eight essential actions to address the gendered drivers of violence against women and the social context in which this violence occurs. These actions include:

  1. Challenge the condoning of violence against women.
  2. Promote women’s independence and decision-making in public life and relationships.
  3. Build new social norms that foster personal identities not constrained by rigid gender stereotypes.
  4. Support men and boys in developing healthy masculinities and positive, supportive male peer relationships.
  5. Promote and normalise gender equality in public and private life.
  6. Address the interactions between gender inequality and other forms of systemic and structural oppression and discrimination and promote broader social justice.
  7. Build safe, fair and equitable organisations and institutions by focusing on policy and systems change.
  8. Strengthen positive, equal and respectful relations between and among women and men, girls and boys, in public and private spheres.

The gendered drivers of violence against women include:

  1. Condoning of violence against women.
  2. Men’s control of decision-making and limits to women’s independence in public and private life.
  3. Rigid gender stereotyping and dominant forms of masculinity.
  4. Male peer relations and cultures of masculinity that emphasise aggression, dominance and control.
